Fui (Fui Heights) Dornod Province Mongolia

Location
Flat, grassy area located at the northern edge of the Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Battlefield.

Wartime History
When Col Sumi’s engineering regiment pass through the area in early July, he remarked: “When you hear the word ‘heights,’ you imagine a mountain or at least a hill.  But here it meant something like a raised pancake, with a diameter of about three km.  The area was like a sandy beach with weeds as thin as joss sticks overlaying the dry surface soil.”

On July 10, 1939, this area was occupied by the Japanese Army's 23rd Reconnaissance Regiment commanded by Lt. Col. Eiici Ioki, plus Manchukuoan forces. On July 15, enemy forces threatened their position.
